When Maithili Sharan Gupta, a famous Hindi poet, wrote years ago:
“Abla Jeevan Hai Teri Yehi Kahani, Aanchal mein hai doodh aur aankhon mein paani”
(What is the life of a helpless woman — tears in her eyes and a suckling child in her lap),
he had portrayed a rather helpless image of women. That was many, many years ago.
While women have since emerged stronger and achieved everything a man could, atrocities against them have not ended — they have only changed shapes. Society is going through turbulent times where the new woman is breaking barriers, questioning the patriarchal mindset, and evolving into a stronger pillar of society — a change that perhaps makes the chauvinist Indian male insecure.
“Offence is the best form of defense” — this may explain why insecure men commit crimes against women.
This Women’s Day, let’s pledge to celebrate every woman who has found her voice and believes that in a healthy social system she must be respected and regarded as an equal, nothing less, nothing more.
Let’s also pledge to give hope and support to every woman who has been victimized because she refused to compromise her values.
A woman is not “Abla” (helpless), but “Sabla” — one with courage and conviction, strong enough to bring about positive change in society.
A haunting visual from the Sabla series — a cry for strength and resilience against fear, silence, and oppression.
A powerful frame from the Sabla series — capturing the weight of silence and the resilience to overcome it.
A poignant Sabla frame — the birdcage becomes a symbol of confinement, yet the spirit remains unbound.
This haunting Sabla portrait captures the duality of pain and defiance — scars that speak of suffering, and raised hands that declare survival and strength.
This Sabla artwork uses dice as a metaphor for women’s struggles — lives gambled, voices silenced, yet resilience holding the power to change destiny.

Finest bhajan I have ever heard is from a film ‘Dhun’ – It’s sung by the legendary Mehndi Hasan Sahab and giving him company is Talat Aziz Sahab. Its written by Anand Bakshi Sahab and music by the evergreen Laxmikant Pyarelal. I am lucky to have this song which I bought online from HMV site….
The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival is Mumbai’s annual celebration of culture, creativity, and community. From installations and sculptures to performances and public art, it transforms the city’s heritage district into a vibrant canvas. Between 2008 and 2013, I had the opportunity to document the festival through my lens. Each year offered something new — yet…
The historic Hooghly Imambara, located in Bandel near Kolkata, was built in 1841 by Hajee Mohummud Mohsin and completed in 1861 at a cost of more than two lakh rupees — a massive sum for that era. Its iconic clock was specially imported from England. This two-storied structure features a wide entrance, giant towers, and…
Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai ka woh maqam hai jo samundar ke beech khada hai aur door se dekhte hi apne paas bula leta hai. Roz hazaaron log yahan aate hain — koi dua ke liye, koi sirf sukoon ke liye, aur koi apne jazbaat samundar ki hawa ke saath baantne ke liye. Mere liye bhi…
