When Maithili Sharan Gupta, a famous Hindi poet, wrote years ago:
“Abla Jeevan Hai Teri Yehi Kahani, Aanchal mein hai doodh aur aankhon mein paani”
(What is the life of a helpless woman — tears in her eyes and a suckling child in her lap),
he had portrayed a rather helpless image of women. That was many, many years ago.
While women have since emerged stronger and achieved everything a man could, atrocities against them have not ended — they have only changed shapes. Society is going through turbulent times where the new woman is breaking barriers, questioning the patriarchal mindset, and evolving into a stronger pillar of society — a change that perhaps makes the chauvinist Indian male insecure.
“Offence is the best form of defense” — this may explain why insecure men commit crimes against women.
This Women’s Day, let’s pledge to celebrate every woman who has found her voice and believes that in a healthy social system she must be respected and regarded as an equal, nothing less, nothing more.
Let’s also pledge to give hope and support to every woman who has been victimized because she refused to compromise her values.
A woman is not “Abla” (helpless), but “Sabla” — one with courage and conviction, strong enough to bring about positive change in society.
A haunting visual from the Sabla series — a cry for strength and resilience against fear, silence, and oppression.
A powerful frame from the Sabla series — capturing the weight of silence and the resilience to overcome it.
A poignant Sabla frame — the birdcage becomes a symbol of confinement, yet the spirit remains unbound.
This haunting Sabla portrait captures the duality of pain and defiance — scars that speak of suffering, and raised hands that declare survival and strength.
This Sabla artwork uses dice as a metaphor for women’s struggles — lives gambled, voices silenced, yet resilience holding the power to change destiny.

Lahron se darrkar nauka paar nahi hoti, Koshish karne walon ki haar nahi hoti. Nanhi chinti jab daana lekar chalti hai, Chadhati deewaron par sau baar fisalti hai. Mann ka vishwas ragon mein saahas bharta hai, Chadhkar girna, girkar chadhna na akharta hai. Aakhir uski mehnat bekaar nahi hoti, Koshish karne walon ki haar nahi…
Mumbai ki khaas chuni hui jagahon, chowks aur gardens me khadi ye mahanubhavo ki statues sirf pathar ki sanrachna nahi hain — ye hamare itihaas ki nishani hain. Har ek statue apni ek kahani rakhta hai, un rachnakaaron ki jo desh ki azaadi ke liye lade, samaj ke liye khade rahe, aur Mumbai aur Bharat…
This article is from the paper cutting treasured by my Dad in his diary. This article was published in the “Times of India” newspaper many years back. He wanted me to read and imbibe it in my own life. I read it and here I save it on my blog for friends to read it….
Mumbai ek aisa sheher hai jahan har kona ek kahani sunata hai. Kabhi food lanes ki bheed, kabhi utsav ka shor, kabhi samundar ka sukoon. Aur main chahta tha ki aap in sab ko sirf dekhen nahi, mehsoos bhi karen. Issi soch se maine banaye yeh rare 360° Virtual Reality videos — jahan aap apne…
3 cheers to all these movie theaters who have screened countless movies and entertained Mumbaikars for so many decades. Long live these theaters and the entertainment business. Mere liye yeh documentation sirf tasveerein nahi, balki yaadon ka ek khazana hai. Mumbai ke cinema houses kabhi sheher ki shaan the — har Friday inke darwaze par…
I have always been drawn to people — their faces, their stories, their silences. Since 2007, I’ve been capturing portraits in and around the streets of Mumbai under a series I first called “Life Continues.” When 365 Season II was about to end in February 2014, I knew there would be a creative vacuum….
