Humans of Mumbai — Portraits & Stories by Humayunn Peerzaada
I have always been drawn to people — their faces, their stories, their silences. Since 2007, I’ve been capturing portraits in and around the streets of Mumbai under a series I first called “Life Continues.”
When 365 Season II was about to end in February 2014, I knew there would be a creative vacuum. A friend from Facebook asked me, “What next?” and suggested I look at the work of a photographer whose project had taken the world by storm — Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton. His passion and consistency amazed me. I realised my own series Life Continues carried the same spirit, and so it naturally evolved into what I now call Humans of Mumbai.

For me, a Human of Mumbai can be anyone — known or unknown, rich or poor, from any caste, creed, community, or gender. The project is not bound by time, rules, or numbers. My only aim is to capture the spirit of Mumbai reflected in its people.
Mumbai is more than just a city — it is a heartbeat of love, unity, triumphs, and struggles. Its people, “Mumbaikars,” are tireless, witty, and passionate, taking life’s ups and downs in stride and living it DILse.
Though I stopped this project some years ago, the portraits remain close to my heart. For me, the Humans of Mumbai will always reflect the spirit of this city and the countless stories that make it alive.
